Jonathan was born and raised in Southern California, in a house with a backyard that opens out to the chaparral and desert foothills of east Los Angeles. He attended middle and high school in Orange County, an endless suburbia of car dates, gleaming coastlines, and ocean sunsets. From a young age, he was fascinated by the experience of place - the raw emotion conveyed by landscapes, their memory across time, and their natural and human histories. He has always tried to capture that experience, whether through his work, writing, or photography. His first camera was a disposable Kodak from summer camp.
Jonathan moved to New Haven, where he studied biology and history at Yale University. He worked at a local hospice, which ignited his interest in the human experience of wellness, illness, and death. His college travels brought him to Alaska, central Mexico, and northwest Cameroon, but for him, the most enduring landscape of those years was on the road to Boston in autumn - the New England hillsides ablaze like a dying flame.
After eight life-changing years in Maryland, Jonathan now works full-time as a palliative care physician in Massachusetts. He lives with his wife, prom date, ecology / oceanography competition teammate, and partner of many years. They spend their free time exploring the woodlands and waterways of New England.
This site is meant to serve as a visual record of their adventures in the Mid-Atlantic, New England, and further afield, and to showcase Jonathan's craft of landscape and nature photography.
