Maryland: Shades of Autumn

One of the great pleasures of living in this region is the magical time between the sultry Chesapeake summer and the dark months of the holiday season.  It is a time of transition all over the Mid-Atlantic: the sunrises grow later and longer while the leaves bask in the gentle Maryland autumn.  As the days shorten, creatures of the land, sea, and air criss-cross the region on their great migrations, and if you listen closely on a quiet morning, you can hear the the woodlands sigh as they settle in for the long nap, shedding their biomass and returning it to the earth. There is something precious about this  time, and it is worth waking early to get out of the city and watch it unfold around you.

This year, I returned to several favorite places throughout Maryland's watersheds. The photos below are chronological and show a few of the colors and moods of autumn in the Mid-Atlantic:
